Scream movies have never had a shortage of scares and gore, but Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett truly turned the bloody violence up a few notches with 2022's Scream and Scream 6. It will be interesting to see if Landon will interweave more of his comedic filmmaking style into Scream 7, but that would ultimately hurt the story Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet built. Even Landon's most recent project, We Have a Ghost, served as a supernatural comedy, though it wasn't as positively received as his other comedic titles. Granted, none of the movies to date would be considered a "horror comedy." The same certainly can't be said for some of Landon's previous works. Scream has always mixed in some goofy elements and incorporated characters that could be viewed as comedic relief such as Jamie Kennedy's Randy and his in-universe niece, Mindy (Brown). Seeing as Landon's biggest successes have relied heavily on comedy, this could be a significant risk for Scream 7's narrative. While the movies are recent standouts in the slasher subgenre, they are all comedic horror movies. However, Landon's most notable works are the Happy Death Day movies and 2020's Freaky. The filmmaker has an extensive history in the horror genre, including work in five Paranormal Activity movies. Instead, the third Scream "requel" centered on Ortega and Barrera's characters will be directed by Christoper Landon. Much to the surprise of some, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet won't be returning to attempt their own Scream trilogy.
